The US economy added just 194,000 jobs in September, falling far short of expectations and marking the second month of lackluster growth. After giving his remarks on the report, President Biden left the stage without answering any questions from the press.

“As we had expected, the lingering impact of the Delta variant continued to weigh on payrolls last month, with leisure and hospitality employment up by only 74,000,” Capital Economics wrote in a message to investors. “But the main disappointment was that, despite the reopening of schools for in-person teaching, overall education employment fell by 180,000.”

Biden delivered a speech from the contentious White House set.

“Jobs are up, wages are up, unemployment is down, that’s progress,” Biden said.

When Biden ended his speech, he turned his back and left the stage without taking any questions from reporters. Fox News’s broadcast lingered for a few moments on an empty stage.

“Allowing a beat there to see if the president took any questions there from the White House as he wraps his remarks on the dismal September jobs report that stunned when it was released,” Fox News anchor Sanda Smith said.
