January 1, Astroworld death toll rises
Bharti Shahani, a 22-year-old college student, severely injured in the deadly crowd surge at the Astroworld concert in Houston, has died. The death toll from the tragic event now stands at nine.
All of the deceased were between the ages of 14 and 27. Hundreds of attendees are still coping with injuries, including a 9-year-old boy who remains in a medically-induced coma.
Shahani was set to graduate from Texas A&M University in the spring. She attended the event with her sister Namrata and their cousin.
“For the first time in her life she just wanted to have fun, and that was taken from her,” Namrata said. Bharti’s last words to her sister were, “Are you OK?”
