January 1, Jan. 6 Committee: Ray Epps Not FBI Informant or Agent

The House Select Committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot said that Ray Epps, a man at the center of theories that federal authorities provoked the incident, is not a law enforcement agent or informant.

The Arizona resident is one of three people to have mysteriously disappeared from the FBI’s Capitol Violence most wanted list without explanation.

“The Select Committee is aware of unsupported claims that Ray Epps was an FBI informant based on the fact that he was on the FBI Wanted list and then was removed from that list without being charged,” a committee spokesperson said in a statement.

“The Select Committee has interviewed Mr. Epps. Mr. Epps informed us that he was not employed by, working with, or acting at the direction of any law enforcement agency on January 5th or 6th or at any other time, and that he has never been an informant for the FBI or any other law enforcement agency.”

Epps, former president of the Arizona Oath Keepers militia group, was seen in videos urging Trump supporters to “go into the Capitol” on the evening of January 5, 2021. The footage sparked theories that Epps was either a federal agent, informant, or otherwise acting under instructions.

On Tuesday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) asked about Epps during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on U.S. domestic terror threats.

“According to public records, Mr. Epps has not been charged with anything. No one’s explained why a person videoed urging people to go to the Capitol, a person whose conduct was so suspect the crowd believed he was a Fed, would magically disappear from the list of people the FBI was looking at,” Cruz said.

“A lot of Americans are concerned that the federal government deliberately encouraged illegal and violent conduct on January 6,” Cruz added. He asked Department of Justice officials if federal agents “actively encourage[d] violent and criminal conduct on January 6.”

“Not to my knowledge, sir,” replied Jill Sanborn, a national security official with the FBI.

Senate Committee Hearings are a waste of taxpayer money and time. They are used to satisfy politicians in their own minds that they have represented their constituents and done their jobs. Most of the hearings are generated by information given by the media and then the public reacts wanting some kind of investigation to be pursued with the hopes of convicting those who are guilty. If a Minority Party driven hearing is held then nothing other than politicians efforts are being satisfied because in the past 10 years I have yet to see anyone convicted. If a Majority Party hearing is held then at least on the Democrat side of things people are tried and convicted. Republicans don’t seem to follow through with their accusations other than “Whine” about things.
