In Florida, officials decided to fire Miami City Police Chief Art Acevedo after just six months on the job due to his tumultuous relationship with the organization.

“The relationship between the Chief and the organization has become untenable and needed to be resolved promptly,” said Art Noriega, Miami city manager. “Chief Acevedo is not the right fit for this organization.”

Acevedo started stepping on toes immediately after his swearing-in in April. He took over internal affairs and made significant staff changes. He demoted four majors and fired two a married couple of high-level officials because they lied about a crash involving a city-issued vehicle.

This past month, the organization had a couple of unruly meetings, where commissioners butted heads with Acevedo over his leadership. In a sort of mutiny, commissioners appointed themselves to an investigative committee with subpoena authority to examine his appointment.

At one of these meetings, they played videos of Acevedo impersonating Elvis Presley, wearing the famous white jumpsuit, and entering a fundraiser’s dance floor, slapping a woman’s posterior with a piece of paper.

At another meeting, city commissioner Joe Carollo asked Avecedo to arrest him if he had any proof that he was interfering with internal affairs investigations.

The city is searching for a replacement, and Assistant Police Chief Manny Morales will take over as interim chief in the meantime.
