January 1, No jail time for Attorney General in crash that killed pedestrian
South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg entered a no-contest plea for misdemeanor traffic charges stemming from a crash last year that killed a pedestrian, effectively skirting any jail time.
Circuit Judge John Brown fined Ravnsborg $500 for each count plus $3,742 in court costs. Additionally, the judge ordered the state’s top law enforcement official to an annual “do a public service event” for five years near the date of victim Joseph Boever’s death.
Ravnsborg said in a statement that he plans to remain in office. He’ll likely face a lawsuit from the Boever’s widow and a potential impeachment attempt.
Boever was walking on the side of a highway when struck and killed by Ravnsborg. The attorney general had been driving home from a political fundraiser.

Everybody knows walking on the side of a highway is dangerous. That strip is for cars to pull off in an emergency, not for use as a pavement. I feel sorry for the family and the Mrs.
