January 1, TikTok Agrees to $92M Settlement in Privacy Case

The social media giant TikTok agreed to a $92 million settlement to users following a series of class-action lawsuits alleging the company had violated their privacy.

The lawsuits alleged that the company collected users’ facial data “without sufficient notice and consent.” TikTok denied any wrongdoing. Nevertheless, most U.S. users who used the app before Sept. 30 of this year will be eligible to claim a share of the $92 million payouts.

“While we disagree with the assertions, rather than go through lengthy litigation, we’d like to focus our efforts on building a safe and joyful experience for the TikTok community,” TikTok said in a statement.

On Monday, the company sent a notification to users who might qualify for compensation, instructing them to send claims to TikTokDataPrivacySettlement.com.
