Report: Cuomo Accused of Sexual Harassment Days Before Termination

According to The Guardian, former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo was hit with an allegation of sexual harassment just days before the network announced his termination.

Attorney Debra Katz said her client alleged “serious sexual misconduct” by Cuomo and had told CNN about the allegation on Wednesday.

Katz said her client decided to come forward after the New York attorney general’s office released a report showing Cuomo had taken a much larger role in helping his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D), following his sexual harassment accusations.

“Hearing the hypocrisy of Chris Cuomo’s on-air words and disgusted by his efforts to try to discredit these women, my client retained counsel to report his serious sexual misconduct against her to CNN,” Katz said in a statement.

CNN Fires Chris Cuomo

CNN fired anchor Chris Cuomo “effective immediately.”

The network’s announcement came after it retained an outside law firm to review information about how Cuomo helped his brother, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), when he was accused of sexual harassment.

CNN suspended Cuomo indefinitely on Tuesday, the law firm submitted its findings on Friday, and network president Jeff Zucker fired Cuomo on Saturday.

“Chris Cuomo was suspended earlier this week pending further evaluation of new information that came to light about his involvement with his brother’s defense. We retained a respected law firm to conduct the review, and have terminated him, effective immediately,” CNN said in a statement.

“While in the process of that review, additional information has come to light,” the statement continued. “Despite the termination, we will investigate as appropriate.”

Cuomo also put out a statement on the matter.

“This is not how I want my time at CNN to end but I have already told you why and how I helped my brother,” Cuomo said. “So let me now say as disappointing as this is, I could not be more proud of the team at Cuomo Prime Time and the work we did as CNN’s #1 show in the most competitive time slot. I owe them all and will miss that group of special people who did really important work.”

CNN Suspends Chris Cuomo

CNN indefinitely suspended anchor Chris Cuomo after details emerged about how he assisted his brother, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo (R-N.Y.), who faces federal sexual harassment charges.

CNN said that it came to its decision after reviewing documents released by New York’s attorney general earlier this week. The report found that Cuomo had taken a greater level of involvement in his brother’s efforts than the network had previously known.

“As a result, we have suspended Chris indefinitely, pending further evaluation,” CNN said.

According to the Associated Press, “Cuomo pressed sources for information on his brother’s accusers and reported back to the governor’s staff, and was active in helping craft their response to the charges, according to emails and a transcript of his testimony to investigators working for state Attorney General Letitia James.”

James found that the former governor sexually harassed at least 11 women.

CNN’s Chris Cuomo accused of sexual harassment

Former ABC executive producer Shelley Ross accused Chris Cuomo of sexually harassing her in front of her husband and coworkers at a work party in 2005. Ross detailed the incident in a New York Times op-ed on Friday.

“I was at the party with my husband, who sat behind me on an ottoman sipping his Diet Coke as I spoke with work friends,” Ross wrote. “When Mr. Cuomo entered the Upper West Side bar, he walked toward me and greeted me with a strong bear hug while lowering one hand to firmly grab and squeeze the cheek of my buttock.”

The veteran TV journalist was working as an executive producer of an ABC program at the time but was just Cuomo’s boss on ABC’s “Primetime Live” immediately prior.

“‘I can do this now that you’re no longer my boss,’ he said to me with a kind of cocky arrogance. ‘No you can’t,’ I said, pushing him off me at the chest while stepping back, revealing my husband, who had seen the entire episode at close range. We quickly left.”

Ross said Cuomo sent her an email an hour later with the subject line, “Now that I think of it … I am ashamed.” Though Cuomo apologized to Ross and her husband in the email, Ross questioned Cuomo’s sincerity.

“Mr. Cuomo may say this is a sincere apology. I’ve always seen it as an attempt to provide himself with legal and moral coverage to evade accountability,” Ross said.

“I never thought that Mr. Cuomo’s behavior was sexual in nature. Whether he understood it at the time or not, his form of sexual harassment was a hostile act meant to diminish and belittle his female former boss in front of the staff.”
