The Pentagon announced that it created a new group specifically to investigate reports of UFOs.

The Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group will examine reports of Unexplained Aerial Phenomena (UAP) — the military term for UFOs — near U.S. military facilities.

Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks said that unidentified aerial phenomena in special-use areas “represents a safety of flight risk to aircrews and raises potential national security concerns.”

The new organization will work in line with other federal agencies “to detect, identify and attribute objects of interest in Special Use Airspace (SUA), and to assess and mitigate any associated threats to safety of flight and national security,” Hicks’s memo read.

The announcement follows last summer’s report from the U.S. intelligence committee that provided the first unclassified assessment of UAP. The report included 143 unexplained incidents.
